Being an Uber driver is a lot like dating.

Uber - every ride is like a blind date!
Since I started driving for Uber I've noticed some distinct similarities between Uber & dating.  More specifically, if you've ever been out on a date with someone you really enjoyed, made you smile etc. and you really wanted to see them again... gave them your number and now you're waiting for them to call.  Uber is like that. And more!
  • As a driver you sit on that Uber app just waiting and waiting for the "call" ... taking the phone to the kitchen, bedroom, even to the bathroom (in case it goes off at an inopportune moment),
  • And then you drag your friends and family into it never wanting to venture to far away from the device-  "if it starts to ping please tap it for me!" - in hopes that if they "hear" from your uber date you'll still be able to catch it and go out again.
  • When you get the call, you hope that your date will appreciate the trouble you go through (be on time, have water, etc.) You want to make sure you are someone that your passenger will want to rate highly.  Sometimes only to be disappointed by a last minute cancellation... if you're lucky at least you got the fee to buy yourself an ice cream to soothe the bruised ego.
  • Just about every ride is a blind date and you just don't know what might be in store for you. Of course you can check your date's "rating" before you get there . . . wait! Is that a 3.0? OMG what am I in for now!
  • When you do get the passenger on board the temptation to "check in" with your "date" is always there - do you like me? Is this going well for you?  Because when your passenger leaves you want that 5 star rating!!  (Sometimes the best dates are the ones where you just shut up and drive ;)
  • But there are always those dates who just make you wonder why you went out... bad manners, reeks of smoke (or other unidentifiable substance),  or overtly disorderly.  "Hey! Are these your keys?" - as they exit the car.
  • Then there is the one great passenger that we all drive for:  on time, wonderful conversation, recognizes courtesy and *gasp* even gives a tip after you've unloaded the 5 bags and helped the girlfriend out of the car..

Oh wait, I was just dreaming about the ride I had two days ago who ACTUALLY WAS a real jackass after I loaded all 5 bags (arranging so they all fit), taking him and girlfriend to airport (after he debated the route with me) and unloading the bags at the departures door. You guessed it - no tip, he barely looked up from his cell phone.
It's funny that Uber can turn you into the most clingy person, possessively hoarding the phone waiting for the next ride in anticipation of who knows what! Even so, I really like the Uber gig - every ride is a new adventure!

  1. I never thought of it like that, but damn if you aren't right. What's your rating sounds like what's your sign lol

    1. LOL Thanks for the comment - you're so right :) I take a look at the passenger ratings and sometimes I even comment to the passenger about it. How did you get to be a 4.5? You seem like a nice enough person ;)

I think I've only given less than 5 stars on 2 occasions so I always wonder.
