Today the ice was melting nicely in the bright sun so the day went rather well. It's always nice when the sun shines, people are happy and moods are lifted.
Started off the day with A - who manages a popular teen retail store at the mall and has been promoted to a larger store across town. She's so excited about her life and the new opportunities in front of her. With my background in retail management we always have a fun chat while en route to the destination.
Then I had one of those super short rides that Uber drivers complain about.... literally 1 block. Nice passenger, but it was only a block and I did drive about 4 miles to get to her. Still, everyone needs a lift now and then.
On to the next rider who enthralled me with the details of a horrible road trip through bad weather in a rental van and how desserts actually get really cold at night when you're camping out. When I dropped him off at his home in a neighborhood with ice coated streets he wished me well with, "be careful on these icy streets." Such courtesy is such a wonderful attribute in another human being.
And then it was on to the next couple who were wisely getting out of town for the New Year but not before they nearly fell on the ice of their own driveway.
Then I met the new district merchandising manager for a very large big box retailer (thing big red multi-circle symbol used for arrows). She had just moved her from KC and was learning her way around the town. We had a great conversation about her new job and why the stores she works for seem to smell odd (it's their filtration system).
And my day ended on an up note when I picked up a future doctor - 3rd year medical school. He had such a great outlook for his future and clear exuberance for his chosen occupation. It's the kind of optimism that is contagious. You just can't help but smile when you meet someone like D.
I rarely meet a passenger who warrants less than the 5 stars we can give. But I read a post from another Uber driver who had quite a different outlook which amounted to "if they don't give me a tip I don't give them a 5 star rating." Bad attitude. If you go into this looking for tips or with the attitude of entitlement you won't be a happy driver and you'll find your fares & ratings go down.
Everyone you meet has something interesting about them. It gives you a different lens through which to look at life.
